Electricity Generation and Distribution Department
What we do
We distribute electricity to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Cape Town and provide the link between Eskom and electricity consumers. We also construct and maintain the equipment that transforms the power supply for the consumers’ needs and supply public lighting. Our department also provides support services, including vending and billing systems, and load control systems.
"The Electricity Generation and Distribution Department is committed to building a more sustainable and secure energy future for Cape Town. We provide for a range of customers, from high voltage electricity supply to customers at the medium and low voltage supply levels – all the while providing for and maintaining a reliable electricity supply to residents of Cape Town."

We include
Enterprise Asset Management
This section is responsible for the maintenance of service standards, internal systems support, and the development of equipment standards and maintenance technologies.
Electricity Supply
This branch consists of Network Control, SCADA Services and Generation. Network Control manages the operations of the network and the supply of energy to the end consumer. They also regulate switching instructions for maintenance crews on planned and unplanned maintenance functions. SCADA Services provides the tools required by Network Control to perform their function. Generation manages maintenance and operations of the City’s generating facilities and dispatch these units as required by Network Control. The City’s power stations (Steenbras Hydro Pump Storage, Athlone Gas Turbine, and Roggebaai Gas Turbine) play an important role in regulation of the maximum demand to meet the set monthly supply target.
Infrastructure Operations
The Infrastructure Management Branch is responsible for all aspects of the wires business that makes up the distribution network of the department – the planning, construction, maintenance and protection of the network, and the metering technologies that measure the consumption of customers are all part of this. Included in Infrastructure Management is the Public Lighting Unit, dedicated to maintaining public lighting, including street lighting, in Cape Town.
Electricity Retail Management
This branch is based on SAP ISU (Integrated Solutions for Utilities Module) functionality and is responsible for customer services including the Technical Operational Centre (TOC), revenue protection, revenue management, vending services, and measurement.
